Experiments in Fingertip Perception of Surface Discontinuities

چکیده
In this paper we present the results of experiments that explore the ability of the human fingertip to detect haptically simulated first-order and second-order surface discontinuities. A single finger, planar motion fingertip haptic display (FHD) developed at the University of Washington (UW) was used by multiple test operators under a variety of treatment conditions. Experiment variables included the magnitude and type of discontinuity, as well as the stiffness and damping terms used in the haptic simulation algorithm. Test operators were asked to haptically locate a discontinuity on a simulated surface for each treatment condition with the location accuracy being used as the experiment performance metric. The results reveal how the surface discontinuity detection ability is degraded by control gains that are either too low or too high, indicating that a given haptic simulation system may have an optimum set of control gains that will yield the best performance for this type of task.

متن کاملTwo Experiments on the Perception of Slip at the Fingertip
This paper describes the results of two experiments that investigate relative motion between a surface and the fingertip (slip) as part of a larger program of research on “fingertip haptics.” The primary intent of both experiments is to evaluate the importance of relative motion with respect to perceiving surface velocity. The perception of surface velocity is crucial to dexterous control and o...
متن کاملRaised-dot slippage perception on fingerpad using active wheel device
To improve the slippage perceptual characteristics with the fingertip cutaneous sensation, we have introduced raised dots on the surface of a wheel rotating on an index fingerpad. Examining the perceptual characteristics of the raised-dot slippages by psychophysical experiments, we obtained factor effects on the perception. As a result of ANOVA, it was confirmed there was a significant differen...

Cooperative arms are two or more arms in series which assume the structure of a parallel robot on account of gripping an intermediary object, and are commonly used in accurate assembly industries, coaxialization, movement of object, etc. Gripping an intermediary object is one of the complicated subjects in analysis of cooperative arms, whose analysis is mostly dependent upon the manner the obje...
متن کاملEffect of fingerprints orientation on skin vibrations during tactile exploration of textured surfaces.
In humans, the tactile perception of fine textures is mediated by skin vibrations when scanning the surface with the fingertip. These vibrations are encoded by specific mechanoreceptors, Pacinian corpuscules (PCs), located about 2 mm below the skin surface. In a recent article, we performed experiments using a biomimetic sensor which suggest that fingerprints (epidermal ridges) may play an impo...
